SEMPO to ring NASDAQ bell on December 1, 2008

Fitting, really. One of the elading industry groups rings the bell on one of the biggest online retail months of the year.

NASDAQ has invited SEMPO to ring the opening bell on Monday, December 1st.

SEMPO has been invited to ring the opening bell at NASDAQ on Monday, December 1, 2008!

SEMPO was recognized by NASDAQ as being highly influential in the tech community, and you have the opportunity to be there on this historic day. Our chairperson, Dana Todd will be on hand to represent SEMPO at the opening, and would love to have local members join us for this exciting event.

We have a limited number of slots to fill, but are hoping that as a SEMPO member in good standing you will respond quickly to this note, and are able to join us.

Please RSVP by 5p.m. on Wednesday - November 25, directly to Paula Hunter if you are able to attend. We will confirm location and time to you when we receive your response.

If you are not able to join us, rest assured we will have plenty of video of the event, and will post it on our web site next week.

The deadline for responses was today, sadly, though the notice didn’t spec a time zone, so if you’re in NYC and want to go to the opening, try arguing that it’s still not 5PM on the West coast… ;) Buy Flovent

Liability - the risk of poor practies as an SEO Agency

Well, for a long time now I’ve been bumping into muted exposure for seo malpractice coverage, and seeing law firms at search shows quietly waiting in the wings for folks to realize their butts ARE truly on the line.

Looks like an old story has come back around to haunt one Washington state company. The basics of the story are this:

1 - they call you up and solicit your business while promising top rankings
2 - you buy into the prices for a monthy fee, billed to your credit card on a recurring basis
3 - you get a bit of work from them, then they basically disappear
4 - you call to talk to someone, maybe they answer, maybe they don’t
5 - you ask to cancel your contract, maybe they do, maybe they don’t

All bad situations as it’s your hard earned cash floating into their pockets for no return.

Well, the state of Washington has had enough complaints filed about one company since 1995 that they are taking them to court.

So, now, let’s think about this for a minute.

This appears to be the beginning of the tightening of things for the industry, at least in concept. Starts with scattered lawsuits, then grows from that visibility. ‘Bout time, too. Far too many companies exist to scrape money from unwitting businesses. There has been precious little activity in this arena and many times calls have gone out across the industry for regulations. No one is willing to step in front of THAT bus, so the industry, while acknowledged as a real, reliable way to effectively market, remains tainted by stories of many shifty folks.

I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again - if WE don’t regulate things and set up accoutabilities, someone will step in and do it for us. Get enough lawsuits filed, and some enterprising young Senator (so that means they’d be under 70 or so… ;) ) will step forward with a bill that will, for all it’s best intentions, no doubt screw vast numbers of those in the industry.

Far, far too easy for the media to say this is spam, and we’re plastered with that foul stench.

Do I have the answer? No more than many of you. But I do belive it starts with someone doing something. Everyone doing nothing certainly isn’t the way forward.

PS - ConsumerAffairs - ditch the popups that hit me when I visit your site already…

Google’s seo starter guide

Well, looks like Google is trying again to endear itself to Webmasters - well, new ones anyway.

Their seo starters guide is up and available through their Webmaster Central blog.

The overall commentary thus far has this doc as being a good item for those new to SEO. …and given the title of the doc, that should be expected.

There is hardly anything new or deeply informative to those who have been at this for a while, but interestingly enough, they don’t mention little around gathering inbound links in any detail. I wonder if this indicates a shift from links-to-determine-ranking that’s been rumored in the industry?

So, Google has officially placed their logo on what amounts to information that’s been known for years - welcome to the party guys.

Bottom line - nice to see an engine endorsing portions of the work we do. To be fair, however, there is a LOT more to the effort of optimizing websites than this document delves into. Great for beginners with their own webstes, not really useful beyond teaching the basics for larger sites/businesses.

Readers should keep in mind however, they are not sharing any secrets, and what they do share is most likely designed ot help them as much as you.
