How To Make Money With Your Blog now in Russian

Just got a copy from the publisher yesterday! Looks like we’re “international” now with How To Make Money With Your Blog!

It’s pretty mind-blowing to see your book in a language foreign to you. It’s very different looking through it trying to match up what you think the content is with your memory of where chapters were in the English version.

How To Make Money With Your Blog in Russian

Next up I’m expecting to see the launch of my current book, Turn Clicks into Customers, early in the new year (2011) in Chinese, for Singapore and Taiwan. That will be very cool to lay my hands on.

I also seem to be getting more feedback and questions from both books lately, so I wanted to offer up a huge thanks to everyone for buying the books and reaching out. I’m super busy at work, as always, but try to get responses back to folks asap all the same.

SEO, IA and UX - the plot thickens

You know, it’s not every day you see the right conversations happening. A recent post by Adam Audette (here) spoke on the tri-mixed topics of Information Architecture (IA), User Experience (UX) and Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

For years many in the SEO industry have been blindly focusing on “simply seo”. To be fair, it’s tough to fault anyone for doing this. To get even the most modest of SEO programs running and delivering results is no small feat. Truly, it was a time of walk before we run in the industry. More recently, however, some industry folks have been modifying their suggestions to be more inclusive. To better encompass the entirety of what a website truly needs to make it in today’s online world.

Shari Thurow’s Search Engine Land article (clicky) is an excellent primer on the topic. I think Adam’s addition to this line of thought is likewise, excellent. Mostly, I just like that this concept as a “baked whole” is getting airplay more prominently. I long ago stopped giving “SEO advice” when folks approached me. Instead, I began asking slightly invasive question to better understand their landscape. Were they treating SEO as a stand alone item? What else across their site were they investing in? How are they managing conversion optimization, etc.?

Gone are the days of SEO being a stand alone discipline. Today’s SEO needs to manage search, social, conversion optimization, content selection and creation, site architecture, design, technology implmentation and more. It’s not the “simple” career choice it was 7 or 8 years ago…LOL

That said, I, like many in the industry, readily welcome this change in focus. More to the point, it’s about time this coming together of factors was viewed as a single approach. You want Best Practices for SEO? Don’t forget the site, the users and the conversion when doing SEO work. How’s that for “best practice”?

Site updated and what I’m up to

Well, I found the missing code, so the site should be mostly back to normal now. Thankfully it was pretty painless to fix - just needed some time and my dogs. :)

I noticed this week some conversations around Latent Semantic Indexing popping up again. This surprised me given this is an old, old topic in the world of SEO. I can’t tell if this is just folks discovering the topic for the first time and discussing it, or if there has been actual movement on this front by the engines. I haven’t heard anything myself from the engines directly on the topic that’s “new”, but it could have easily slipped past me as the last 2 weeks have been a blur. 2 weeks ago was SMX Advanced here in Seattle, and this week was back to back for 4 days with meetings.

Right now I’m rewatching The Talented Mr. Ripley and yearning to go back to Italy. Might have to plan a trip soon. That or buy a Vespa or some other scooter…! Not sure I’ll end up as cool as this guy (Florence, 2007), but it’s worth a try.

Site needs updating…

Well, it appears I did the bonehead thing and dropped some code for this template. :(

I’ll need to spend some time revamping the site over the next few days, so if you see weirdness, it’s me frigging around in the back end a bit.

In the meantime, follow me @sportsguy on Twitter…

…and we’re back - lost some data, lost my mind for a bit, but all good now!

Well, my sites are back on line! Amazing.

3+ months ago my server ate a line of code in the Plesk control interface. This essentially meant anyone calling into the server hit a dead end, as the server didn’t know who or what it was anymore. The login didn’t work, so even me as an admin couldn’t access it.

Godaddy’s solution - I needed a new box. The good news is that because I run a dedicated server, they managed to save most of my data, as the backup hard drive was unaffected. The production hard-drive, however, was toasty, crispy, fried… :( Crow bars appeared, the backup HD was rescued from the smoking hulk of my dead sever and mirrored onto the new server (for a fee, naturally).

So, I got “most” of my content back, but site’s like this one have gaps where I’d been posting for a few months, but not backing up (lesson learned the hard way) frequently. The current plan is 2 backups - one on the server, the other to an external hard drive at home.

In the end, despite 3 months of emailing and calls every week to GoDaddy Customer Support, I figured out the fix on my own. Fitting since on each call they reminded me I don’t pay for a “supported” machine, so they could only send me documentation from their Help area, but couldn’t actually “Help” me, or answer certain questions…

Trouble was, the reps were mostly clueless. One guy responded by throwing the kitchen sink at me - docs completely unrelated to my application and situation. The laughable bit is that one reference to a completely different server control software system jogged my memory about something on my own system. After a bit of hunting around, I found the errant item, swapped it out and BAM, sites back online!

I do offer my thanks to the guy, because as a result of that interaction, this was sorted out. Not because he knew what he was doing, or paid attention to my account details or my own responses to his questions, but still - he da man!

Last night was my last try - I was about to call Liquid Web and simply hand them the login deets to my server and tell them to take the content and get my sites live. The cost is more than my set up at GD, but I *think* I get server support over there for the price, so it might be worth looking into if anyone wants solid hosting (based on reports from others I trust who use them).

If I can find any missing posts, I’ll repost them - where’s the Wayback machine…? :)

I’m heading to Europe!

Not that this is going to rock anyone’s world, but I’m heading to Europe for a couple weeks of vacation on Sept. 6th.

Going to be hitting England, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and France - can’t wait!

I won’t be connected at any point, I don’t think, so expect nothing new here for a couple weeks, sadly. :( Just poke around the read the info I have posted on my pages already if you’re that bored… :)

I’ll be pretty much taking pictures 24/7 while over there - indulging in another hobby of mine. Should be fun.

Thanks for coming by - I’ll be back soon and will get to posting asap!

Book update

Well, I’m into it now big time.

The contract have been signed, sent back and the writing has begun.

…now to find 50,000 words and about 100 image son the topic…hmmm - seems I have some work to do. :)

In truth, since I’m co-authoring this puppy, the work-load gets split. Still, it’s a lot to due before the June 1st first draft deadline. Looks like we’re still shooting for a Fall 2007 launch of this gift to the literary world.

WOW! 50,000 words. Seems like a lot, doesn’t it? In truth, I’m more concerned about finding 100 related topic images to go along with all this content. Well, I suppose that’s where SnagIt comes in. ;) And since I run a couple of blogs/sites myself, it’s easy enough to find “locations to shoot” as it were.

Working title is still Blogonomics, but it’s hardly written in stone at this point.

BAH! Damn servers! bear with me while I shoot this thing again…

We’ll the transition from one server to the next is not going smoothly.

Tried to go back to the VDS and restart the old site, and ended up back here at the new server, empty again. :(

Should be sorted soon.
